Modernisation Makeover: Rebuilding Streamtime

Streamtime’s nearly 25! After a full rebuild 8 years back, we’re evolving again—smarter code, sharper design.

Did you know that Streamtime's been around for almost 25 years? In that time, the company's gone through multiple transformations — including an absolute rebuild of our product, around 8 years ago.

Some of our customers who've been with us for time immemorial might remember what we called 'Streamtime New' way back then in 2016. Back then, the product was barely more than the To Do page. Over time, we've built more and more around that page to make our product offering more robust, with, as always, the goal to help build happier, healthier teams in happier, healthier businesses.

Around five years ago we embarked on rebuilding the Schedule in newer code to enhance performance and ease of development. Even so, time and tech passes quickly and earlier this year it was time this yet again to look at the way everything was held together and to see if we could increase our efficiency, clean house, and set us on the right foot to take on the future.

Enter our front end modernisation project. Behind the scenes, we've been, pulling things apart, putting them back together, and tightening all the screws with the help of some consultants. This weekend's release marks the first output of this project, including new, more accessible components; design tweaks across the board to our colour palette and behaviours. The Dashboard and some modals is where you'll see these changes first, and as time goes on, you'll see it grow across the whole product. My favourite part of this release is the new date picker in the Dashboard. It's far easier and smoother from our point of view, and we hope you agree. Another fresh and lovely update is the look and feel of our graphs and charts — spy some sweet little animations at play there.

You can imagine a project like this is no small feat, so we'll be tackling this one feature at a time, in parallel with gathering customer feedback and shipping functional improvements as well as we go.

We could go on and on about the details here: monorepo, tokens, design system, react-aria and all the rest — but that might be a bit too much for today. So: hit reply in Streamtime if you'd like to hear more about this journey and how we're making our way through it, and we'll endeavour to share more about the process as we go through it.

Till next time,

Sarah,
Head of Product and Brand
